The United States' plans to annex Greenland may only surprise at first glance and lead to the mistaken belief that these are merely extravagant remarks by President Trump. In 1910, a trilateral deal was prepared to exchange territories between the U.S., Germany, and Denmark, which would have granted Greenland to the United States, but the agreement ultimately fell through. During World War II, the U.S. established military bases in Greenland, and after the war, it offered to purchase the island from Denmark.
