Associate biology professor Allyson Friedman of Hunter College has been placed on leave following widespread backlash over racist remarks captured on a hot mic during a virtual Community Education Council meeting in New York City.
The incident occurred while an eighth-grade Black student was speaking about concerns over a potential school closure. Friedman, who attended the meeting as a parent, was heard making offensive comments after apparently failing to mute her microphone. The remarks quickly circulated online, sparking outrage from public officials and community leaders.
Hunter College President Nancy Cantor announced that the university has launched an investigation under its conduct and nondiscrimination policies. Pending the outcome, Friedman has been placed on administrative leave.
