Brighton, who lost 6-1 at Aston Villa last time out, are a point further back in sixth.

Lewis Dunk grabbed a late equaliser as Brighton rescued a 2-2 draw with Liverpool following an absorbing match at the AMEX Stadium.

The Merseysiders were looking to bounce back from their controversial first league loss of the campaign at Tottenham last week, but fell behind on 20 minutes when Simon Adingra caught out former Seagulls star Alexis Mac Allister before firing a clinical long-range shot beyond the out-of-position Alisson.

The visitors struggled for large periods in the first 45 but turned it around with a double blast in five minutes prior to the break.

Salah guided home his first on 40 minutes following sublime build-up from Dominik Szoboszlai, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez before coolly converting a spot kick after Bart Verbruggen and Pascal Gross were caught playing out from the back.

The second period was a much more open affair with Alisson doing brilliantly to deny the lively Adingra from close-in before Liverpool substitute Ryan Gravenberch somehow hit the bar with the goal gaping.\Brighton took control as the game entered the final stages and deservedly levelled 12 minutes from time when Dunk powered in Solly March’s devilish free kick.

The result moves Liverpool up to third, three points behind leaders Tottenham ahead of Manchester City’s clash at Arsenal. Brighton, who lost 6-1 at Aston Villa last time out in the league, are a point further back in sixth.

Following the international break, Liverpool hosts Everton in the Merseyside derby. Brighton travel to Manchester City.

Talking Point

Honours even after an entertaining tussle. Liverpool have endured some miserable moments against Brighton in recent times with the last two meetings in league and cup exemplifying how much the Reds were in need of a midfield rebuild back in January this year.

It looked like it might be a similar story early on here as they fell behind for the seventh time in just 11 matches this term. Salah’s double gave the Reds the platform to change the narrative but they allowed the hosts to dominate in the latter stages and paid the price. It could be seen as two points dropped but given the Merseysiders have now only managed one win in their last seven encounters with the Seagulls, avoiding a second straight loss after what happened at Tottenham was vital.

Indeed, Jurgen Klopp’s men are very much in the mix at the upper echelons of the table heading into the international break as he marked eight years at the helm with a point.
As for Brighton, this was more like the team that have upset the Premier League aristocracy. They bounced back from the 6-1 mauling at Villa and continue to entertain with brilliance in attack and frailties at the back.

Player of the match

Simon Adingra (Brighton). The 21-year-old gave Andy Robertson a torrid time down the right flank. The Ivorian’s pace and trickery saw him carve out plenty of openings for his teammates and he marked an excellent performance with his second goal for the club.
